Shell extends STEM Programme to St. Mary’s College
Within recent months, St. Mary’s College, one of the oldest secondary schools in Trinidad and Tobago, has successfully completed the refurbishment of its three major Science labs - Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A few days ago, a Commissioning ceremony was held to officially mark the completion of the refurbishment programme and to say “Thank You” to the three sponsors.
The refurbishment programme commenced in 2018 and was completed late last year. A Labs Refurbishment Committee comprising members of the Past Students’ Union, teachers from the Science department of the College and representatives of the respective financiers of the refurbishment programme, together with CIC alumni who are highly experienced professionals in their respective fields, came together to plan and execute the programme.
Refurbishment of the two Biology labs was financed by Shell Trinidad and Tobago Limited (Shell) as part of its national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Programme in support of Science education in this country. At the Commissioning ceremony, Mr. Leslie Bowrin, External Relations Advisor to Shell and the liaison between Shell and the Refurbishment committee, explained that Shell’s role in financing the work on the Biology labs is part of the company’s drive to encourage the holistic development of students. He went on to say that inculcating a passion and love for the Sciences among students is what under-pinned their decision to finance projects such as those being commissioned.
Principal of the College, Mr. Nigel Joseph, spoke on behalf of Dr. Wayne Frederick, a distinguished past student of St. Mary’s and now President of Howard University in Washington, D.C. in the USA. Dr. Frederick spearheaded a drive to raise funds to refurbish the two Physics labs, undertaking this role because, as he put it, his experience at St. Mary’s was second to none so he wanted to give back to his alma mater, hoping that other generations will do likewise.
Mr. Brevard Nelson, current President of the Past Students’ Union listed the several projects undertaken by the organization in recent years, amounting to over five million dollars within the past five years. Included in that list was the refurbishing of the College’s two Chemistry labs was the refurbishment and air-conditioning of the Centenary Hall that was completed in 1963, on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of this iconic institution. The source of the funds for these projects was the two major fund-raising activities hosted annually by the Past Students’ Union – Fete With The Saints and Dining With The Saints.
The refurbishment of each of the three labs cost in excess of one million dollars.

“His choice of passes was one of the best I’ve seen!” Remembering the ‘pass-master’ Sedley Joseph
Article written by Lasana Liburd for WIRED[868]
“I never saw Sedley [Joseph] in the middle of a problem as a player, and as manager he was even better…”
“Sometimes a player might make an accurate pass but it wasn’t the best one—he would always see the best pass…”
“Captain Sedley was the epitome of the essential gentleman: noble in his endeavours, generous with his time and himself, upright and frighteningly upstanding…”
“I don’t know that football is producing men of his quality any more…”
Trinidad and Tobago Sport Hall of Fame inductee and former Men’s National Senior Team captain Sedley Joseph passed away on Monday 8 June 2020 at the age of 80, after ailing for some time with his kidneys.

Caribbean people and especially CIC Alumni are known to be very social people and self-isolation or practicing social distancing can be difficult but this is absolutely necessary for us to flatten the curve and avoid some of the challenges other countries are experiencing. Many of our alumni are on the frontlines across the globe in different roles in this fight against COVID-19 and we continue to keep them in our prayers. We also take this opportunity to tap into our alumni network to share their knowledge with us. As a result we have evolved our CIC CONNECT brand to an online series where we will share knowledge, network and reconnect with our colleagues.
The first in this series is a webinar entitled, Understanding and Surviving COVID-19. In this session we will be joined by 3 panelists:
Dr. Wayne Frederick (President of Howard University)
Dr. Avery Hinds (Director, Epidemiology division (MoH TT)
Dr. Hamish Mohammed (Epidemiologist - UK)
These panelists are experts in their respective fields and they will point the microscope on the COVID-19 virus and share some tips on preventing its spread and flattening the curve.

Once again, a number of high-profile chefs will be included in the line-up so that one can expect to be served by captains of industry, doctors, lawyers, pannists, etc., etc. The politicos will be there as usual, but on that night they will set aside whatever political differences they may have and instead have a friendly ‘debate ‘ centered around the best Dish. Patrons can expect to’ taste the hand’ of Gary Griffith, Colm Imbert, Vasant Bharath, Mariano Browne, Stuart Young, David Lee (the MP for pointe-a-pierre) and Gerry Hadeed and of course Faris Al-Rawi.

This is for all supporters who couldn't be there to witness the tremendous skill, discipline and team spirit displayed by our boys.
The only all-male steel band in their category and, quite possibly, the only band that did not have their arrangement done by an adult by the definition used in the competition (25 and over).
They can hold their heads high in school today and we need to have a little thanksgiving gathering for them before we close for Carnival.
Steelpan at St Mary's keeps going from strength to strength.
